More Is More at a Vibrant Winnetka Abode

Taking a maximalist perspective on the design, the AKD team adds color, pattern, and lively details to make a family home pop.

For a family of five who wanted their home to be as vibrant as they are, designer Amy Kartheiser knew she had to bring the space to life — adding bold colors, patterns, and accessories to create a space as fun as the people who live there. Case in point: AKD installed Schumacher’s Birds and Butterflies wallpaper in the dining room and Oomph’s Newport Mirror in the entryway.

Pops of turquoise in the butler’s pantry and powder room speak to the homeowners’ love of bright color. “We installed Lindsay Cowles wallpaper behind the glass cabinets in the butler’s pantry to give some extra visual interest beyond that amazing collection of china,” Kartheiser says. In the powder room, black trim grounds the Lee Jofa wallpaper.

In the primary bedroom, AKD added a textured wallcovering to further enhance the bed, which the homeowners purchased on their honeymoon in Bali. “We took the textured and rustic look of the bed and made it more modern with the bedding, nightstand, mirror, and lamps,” Kartheiser says.
