AKD’s Guide to Design Gems Around Chicago

Chicago is home for my family, it’s where I built my business, it’s bursting with culture, and of course, it’s packed with an incredible design scene that’s woven into every block and neighborhood. Friends and family — especially out-of-towners — are always reaching out asking for my recommendations in the city, so I thought it would be a fun change of pace to leave the design tips behind this week to take a little tour of Sweet Home Chicago…

…But with endless food guides and the latest on the city’s patio scene just a search away, I didn’t want to pull together any old round-up, I wanted to take a different spin focusing on what I know best: design. Below, I’ve highlighted some of my favorite haunts that I love not only for their offerings, but for their incredibly noteworthy designs, as well.

Read on for my picks for Chicago’s most well-designed spaces, places and experiences. Happy exploring!

The Peninsula Spa

I’m a firm believer that self-care is non-negotiable. When I need to catch up, unwind and soak in some relaxation, I always turn to the Peninsula Spa. From a coveted indoor pool to a sun terrace offering captivating views of the Chicago skyline, their indulgent services are wrapped in the most breathtaking design aesthetic.

BIÂN

I’ve been hearing about Chicago’s newest wellness hot spot, and I’m dying to check out the space, brimming with stunning lighting + easy neutral tones. Plus it has a spa, a gym, and a health-focused food + beverage concept – totally speaking my name!

Z Bar

The focal point of Z Bar’s lounge has to be the stunning skylight. When the weather allows, I love to take my cocktail alfresco, hovering around their sleek fire-pits, for some of the best people watching in the city.

Maple and Ash

I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re already familiar with this Chicago standout – Maple and Ash is THE place to be for girls night out, date night, celebratory dinners, and more. I come back time again, not only for amazing bites, but for the sultry, moody ambiance that is unlike anything else in the city.

Ambassador

Formerly the Public Hotel, the Ambassador in Chicago’s Gold Coast is just that: golden! The hotel is warm and elevated, and its design details always leave me feeling inspired.

Ella Elli

A neighborhood gem tucked away on Southport (one of my favorite Lakeview streets) Ella Elli is not only delicious but has gorgeous interiors! A wine lover’s dream (*raises hand*), my favorite design element has got to be the statement the bar makes, complete with brass detailing weaved throughout and captivating light fixtures.
